Since the 1970s, the PWA has been involved in the effort to conserve the unique run of Chinook Salmon which return to the Birkenhead River each year. These efforts include ten years of volunteer hatchery operation.
We ask that all of our members help to spread the word about this ongoing conservation effort.
If you are interested in angling on the river please double-check the regulations before you head out into the field. It is our understanding that there is a bait ban in place. You must use single barbless hooks and there is NO salmon fishing allowed. Further information on the regulations can be obtained online Fishers and Ocean Canada website.
The Birkenhead Chinook salmon are moving up into the river now and will hold in the river until they begin spawning in late August. They are extremely vulnerable during this final chapter of their lives and deserve our respect and protection.
Violations of the regulations – including harassment – should be reported to the Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans Observe, Record and Report line at 1-800-465-4336.
Local Fisheries Officers will do their best to respond in a timely fashion to any calls related to Birkenhead Chinook.
